BPH Q & A

What is BPH?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH is a noncancerous condition affecting your prostate gland. BPH happens when your prostate swells, causing a partial urethra blockage. Because your urethra carries urine out of your body, BPH can cause a number of urinary symptoms, including:

  • Frequent urinary urges
  • Increased urinary urgency
  • Weak urine stream
  • Slow-starting urine stream
  • Stop-and-start urine stream
  • Feeling that you can’t fully empty your bladder
  • Dribbling or leakage after urination

Although BPH isn’t prostate cancer and doesn’t cause prostate cancer, it’s still enormously frustrating and inconvenient for millions of men. Fortunately, Midwest Urology Associates offers a variety of today’s most cutting-edge BPH solutions, including:

  • UroLift®
  • Rezum™
  • Aquablation®
  • High intensity focused ultrasound

What option is best for your BPH depends on your symptoms and general health. Midwest Urology Associates is a center of excellence for UroLift and Rezum, and they’re the only practice in the Midwest to offer Aquablation.

What is UroLift?

UroLift is a minimally invasive BPH treatment that Midwest Urology Associates offers on-site. This treatment involves local anesthesia, followed by urethral delivery of a UroLift delivery device.

The device allows for the deployment of tiny implants that secure your swollen prostate tissue on either side of your urethra. The device comes out, and the implants remain in place permanently to clear your urethral obstruction and relieve urinary symptoms.

Many men have less BPH symptoms within only two weeks of their UroLift procedure. UroLift doesn’t affect your sexual function.

What is Rezum?

Rezum is a type of water vapor therapy for BPH. In this procedure, 9-second doses of heated water vapor selectively destroy (ablate) the excess prostate tissue causing your urinary symptoms. Rezum is an in-office treatment that typically offers symptom relief within two weeks. As with UroLift, it requires only local anesthesia.

What is Aquablation?

Aquablation is an advanced BPH therapy that uses multidimensional imaging with a cystoscope and ultrasound to create the most precise and detailed image of your prostate and urethra. With robotic assistance, the Midwest Urology Associates team maps a treatment plan. Then, the robot delivers heat-free high-velocity water jets that operate near the speed of sound for very rapid treatment with reliable results.

You can recover from BPH without surgery or significant downtime. The Midwest Urology Associates team can help you decide which BPH solution is best for your particular needs, so call either office or book your consultation online now.
